2nd Class Work: 11th May - 15th May
Dear boys and girls,
Another week....another week's work!
You are all doing so well so keep up the great work and I am so delighted every time I get a piece of work from one of you. Some children have even sent me little videos of themselves doing their reading - English or Irish and that just made me so happy and so proud.
This week on Friday I am going to set up a really fun quiz for you to take part in. You can each do it in your own time. It's not something everyone will be doing together at the same time but it will be good for you to test yourselves on how much you can remember from what you've been learning about this week and last. I will let you know closer to Friday how you can access this quiz. I'm very excited about it.
So let's really try to keep focusing and working hard this week and don't forget to make sure that you are still also getting to do plenty of what you enjoy too because that is so important. Sometimes quarantine is hard and it's okay to feel fed up every now and then. But we must be able to help ourselves to get back to a happy place too. Can you remember our 5 Ways to Wellbeing? I've put a picture here to help you in case you've forgotten. Use these steps if you're feeling fed up and you'll be back to your jolly old self in no time!
We are all, the teachers and your parents, very proud of you for being so good and so mature about this pesky lockdown and I can promise you that when we do all get back to school, we will do something nice to reward you for being so great.
So boys and girls, let's get our happy hats on and ready to take on another week!!
I am missing you all and hoping to see you soon.

Timetable
Please click here for a suggested timetable that you can follow this week if you would like. This may suit some children but not others and that is absolutely fine. Every child should work to their own system at their own pace.

English
For English this week, you can see in the timetable above, we will have 3 lessons; two reading lessons with questions and one phonics/sounds lesson . Everything you need for these lessons is attached below.
I also want you to continue to do 10-20 minutes DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) each day. This is a really great way to get interested in reading because as you go through a book you will become more and more interested in the story and wondering how it will end - even if it seemed like a chore to read it in the beginning. When you've finished your book (in your own time), complete a book report on it using one of the templates I gave you last week (check last week's links) and send it to me. I would really love to see it. You don't have to do this for every book you read and you don't have to do one every week. But I would love to get at least one book report from each child over the next few weeks so that I can see what you're reading.
I got some excellent book reviews last week so I'm looking forward to getting a few more next week.
Parents can go to the suggested timetable for help on how to conduct these lessons.
Lesson 1 The Water Cycle
Lesson 2 Christopher Columbus
Lesson 3 Phonics Worksheet
Gaeilge
You will find all of the activities you need to complete this week for Gaeilge by clicking here. Our theme is An Scoil. I hope you enjoy it.
Maths
For Maths this week, we are going to cover the topic of Time. Second class children should complete the following pages in their Maths Book: Pages 108 109 and 118. Instructions on how to help your child can be accessed by clicking on this link: Guide for Parents
History
Last week in History we learned about Christopher Columbus. This week, I want you to see if you can learn about a different famous explorer and complete a mini-project on him. There were so many of these explorers. Marco Polo, Ferdinand Majellan or even James Cook about whom the 3rd and 4th class children learned last week. If you have a sibling in 3rd or 4th class, why not see how closely they were paying attention by asking them the questions in the project template attached here!!

Science
Continuing on with our theme of water, why not try this really fun Science experiment about growing your own rainbow. Don't for get to let me know how it goes. I got some lovely photos of last week's experiment. Hopefully you will enjoy this one just as much. Click here to get this really cool experiment.
Religion
We have received these lovely resources for May from the bishop's office. I think you will enjoy doing them. Don't forget that May is Mary's special month and our school, Scoil Naomh Mhuire, is named after Mary so we should try to be extra good this month and don't forget to set up those lovely May altars so that you have somewhere special to go when you want to say a prayer. You can get the May resources by clicking Religious_education_in_may.pdf
I'm also leaving up the other document from last week. These are quie similar so you could go between them and pick and chose what you like.
