2nd Class Work: 18th May - 29th May
Dear boys and girls,
I hope you've all had a lovely weekend and are ready to take on another week. Below is your work for the next two weeks. I may add one or two bits over the next fortnight so keep an eye on the page.
Well done to all of you who completed our quizzes last week. You all did so well and I was very impressed with the can-do attitude of those of you who gave the quiz a second and third try in an effort to beat your scores. Huge well done to you. Let me know if you enjoyed them or not as I might put a few more quizzes up if they are something you like.
I look forward to seeing all your work and I hope you'll enjoy our new theme of Summer.
This would have been a very busy and important week for you if we had been in school as we would have been doing all our last minute preparations for our First Holy Communion this Sunday. I am disappointed for you that you missed out on experiencing this but I hope that you will all do something nice on Sunday to mark the day and to celebrate with your family. We will celebrate both your First Penance and your First Holy Communion together as a group as soon as it is safe for us to do so.
Have a great week everyone.

Timetable
Please click here for a suggested timetable that you can follow this week if you would like to. This may suit some children but not others and that is absolutely fine. Every child should work to their own system at their own pace.

English
Word Wizard Chapter 13 pages 73-78; Making a Bubble Bomb
Focus for this fortnight is on the procedural genre - how to do something / following instructions. The children are exposed to this in baking, science experiments, Art or anything that involves a step-by-step process so it is an important genre to master.
Phonics focus is on silent letters as seen on page 76. Here is a silent_letters_snakes_and_ladders.pdf game which I thought was really good as it teaches the children new vocabulary as well as silent letter patterns.
Gaeilge
Bun go Barr Aonad 17 pg. 106-111
You may find Ag Súgradh San Uisce of some help if there are any words you don't understand or any words you can't read.
Maths
This week in Maths you will be learning patterns and skip counting. Being able to skip count or count in groups will really benefit you next year when you are in 3rd Class and learning multiplication.
Begin by counting in 10s and 5s (Mathemagic: Pages 129 and 127)
Next, practise counting in 2s and 4s (Mathemagic: Pages 123 and 125)
After that, move on to counting in 3s and 6s (Mathemagic: Pages 124 and 128)
Page 126 recaps on counting in 2s, 3s and 4s.
Use this blank 100 square to help.
You can find the Splat Square that we use in school here.
Topmarks also has a good game called Paint the Squares
Book work: Mathemagic Pages 123-129
Mental Maths Pages 62 - 63 plus the next incomplete Friday test
Maths topic for the week commencing 25 May will be Money:
Mathemagic Pages 143-145 and page 147. Again, I will leave out page 146 as this type of activity caused major confusion the last time we covered Money in school. As with the week of 20th April, the same rules apply. Practise using the coins and when calculating change (on pages 144 and 147) subtract the cost of the purchases from the amount given (using the coins).
History
In History this week we will learn about the historic Irish festival called Bealtaine (pronounced Bee-ou-thin-a), which is the Irish word for May. To learn more about this festival click here.
Geography
In Geography we will learn about people and places in other areas and will focus on Africa. Click on the link to learn more.

Science
Our theme for the fortnight is summer. We will focus on this in Science by thinking about how we recognise signs of summer in living things all around us. Part of your work for this fortnight is to get out for a walk or just into your garden and notice the signs of summer. Our summer.pdf might help you to recognise the signs.
Religion
This would have been a very busy and important week for you if we had been in school as we would have been doing all our last minute preparations for our First Holy Communion this Sunday. I am disappointed for you that you missed out on experiencing this but I hope that you will all do something nice on Sunday to mark the day and to celebrate with your family. We will celebrate both your First Penance and your First Holy Communion together as a group as soon as it is safe for us to do so.
Below are a few activities you can complete this week. You could also write a little about what you are most looking forward to about your Communion when you do get to celebrate it. The Communion Prayers can be learned one per week over the next three weeks. This week we will start with the Prayer before Communion.

Get your week off to an active start by taking on one of Joe Wicks's sessions. Trust me, you'll be glad to be sitting down to a bit of Gaeilge by the time you've finished!! Find him here. Good luck!
