1st and 2nd Class Work: 5th May - 8th May
Dear boys and girls,
Wishing you all a very happy summer! May is here, we're all healthy and happy I hope, and the sun is shining so all is good.
I'm sure by now you've all heard the disappointing news that we will not be back to school this year. I know you are all missing your friends a lot and I'm sure you would have liked to have been back to school before the summer holidays. However, we must do as we are asked to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. The main things we are being asked to do are to stay at home and to continue to wash our hands carefully.
Time for another week's work ahead. I know you'll all do your very best as you do every week. Keep chipping away at it a little bit every day and you will be fine. Remember especially to keep going with your reading. Keep sending me in the bits of work you're getting through as I love to see them.
This week I have included a suggested timetable that you can follow. This might help you or you might prefer to do it your own way and that is fine. You can click on the link just under this message to download it.
I am missing you all very much and looking forward to the time when we can all get together again.

English
For English this week, you can see in the timetable above, we will have 3 lessons; two writing lessons and one oral language lesson. Everything you need for these lessons is attached below.
I also want you to do 10-20 minutes DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) each day. This is a really great way to get interested in reading because as you go through a book you will become more and more interested in the story and wondering how it will end - even if it seemed like a chore to read it in the beginning. When you've finished your book (in your own time), complete a book report on it using one of the templates below and send it to me. I would really love to see it. You don't have to do this for every book you read and you don't have to do one every week. But I would love to get at least one book report from each child over the next few weeks so that I can see what you're reading.

Gaeilge
All of the activities you need to complete this week for Gaeilge are in the attached document. If you click on the audio in the centre of the pages of the reading, you will hear me reading the pieces. You can listen to me and then read the pieces aloud yourselves, copying how I have read.

Maths
As part of our theme of water this week, our chosen whole-school topic is Capacity. 1st and 2nd Class have already covered capacity. I am therefore going to give some number work from Mathemagic for the remainder of the week. This work is outlined in each class's respective timetable. I have however, also included some capacity challenge cards to help refresh your memories about the concept of capacity.

Geography
The Water Cycle
The world is made up of about 70% water. The world’s water moves between lakes, rivers, oceans, into the air, up to the sky, down to the ground and back to the lakes, rivers and oceans in an ongoing circle or cycle called – you guessed it! – the water cycle. As it goes through this continuous system, it can be a liquid (water), a gas (vapour) or a solid (ice).
Find out all about the water cycle in this video below and see if you can remember what the four major terms/stages associated with the water cycle mean:
Once you've watched this video, draw a picture of the water cycle and label the parts/stages.
Can you include the following terms:
Evaporation Condensation
Precipitation Collection
Sun Clouds
Rivers, lakes, oceans
This diagram may help you with your own drawing:

Science
How do clouds work?
Clouds are formed when water vapour rises into the air (evaporation). When the vapour hits cold air, it turns back into droplets of water (condensation). Those tiny drops of water floating in the air collect and "stick" together to form clouds. When clouds get so full of water that they can't hold any more, the water falls back to the ground as rain (precipitation).
Similarly in this experiment, the food colouring,( which represents the water droplets), becomes too heavy for the shaving foam, (which represents the clouds) to hold and so the food colouring begins to break through the shaving foam and fall to the bottom of the glass.

Religion
We have received a very special message from Bishop Denis for all the boys and girls who are making their First Holy Communion this year. You can watch it here:

Bishop Denis has also sent this lovely booklet with activities for the children to complete. The booklet is entitled My First Holy Communion but the activities are actually just based on Mary's month; May and can also be completed by First class children. You can find this booklet here:
